Innovation and opportunities from the future of the New Space Economy

On 10 December 2024, the ‘Spazio chiama Terra’ event (‘Space Calling Earth’ ) was held at the Italian Space Agency, an important opportunity to discover how the microgravity environment can revolutionise research and technological development. This event, part of the celebration of National Space Day (16 December), represents a significant step towards bringing the private sector closer to the possibilities of the space environment and exploring the innovative opportunities offered by space stations, true platforms for testing unique technologies, and building a competitive Italian industrial ecosystem.

During the event, it was emphasised that the future of commercial space stations will allow even more revolutionary technologies to be developed, with tangible spin-offs on Earth, from medicine to agriculture. Bioregenerative systems developed for recycling water and waste in space, for example, are solutions that could also have concrete applications in terrestrial contexts marked by climate emergencies and resource scarcity.

Among the topics discussed, particular emphasis was placed on the opportunities offered by future space stations not only for companies in the space sector, but also for industrial realities operating in sectors not traditionally linked to space. Microgravity represents a unique environment for biotechnology and pharmaceutical research.

For Addax Biosciences, participation in the workshop was a valuable opportunity to assess the contribution our solutions can make in such an innovative context. In particular, a fixative that is free of carcinogenic components and safe for those who handle it would be an ideal solution for applications in space, where protecting the health and safety of operators is of paramount importance.

The ‘Space Calling Earth’ workshop confirmed how crucial it is for the private sector to look beyond terrestrial boundaries and actively contribute to building a competitive Italian industrial ecosystem.
